The Algarve has surf on two coasts. The Atlantic west coast, with Arrifana, Amado, Bordeira and Cordoama, picks up swell almost all year. Around Sagres, Beliche and Zavial are the spots to check when the west coast is too big or windy. Summer brings smaller waves that suit beginners and longboarders, while October to May has larger, more consistent swells. For a first lesson, Amado, Arrifana and Meia Praia in Lagos are the usual choices.
This guide covers the best surf spots by area and level, the surf seasons, lessons and where to stay.

When to Surf in the Algarve
| Season | Waves | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| June to September | Smaller, gentler waves | Beginners, longboarders, lessons |
| October to May | Bigger, more consistent Atlantic swells | Intermediate and advanced surfers |
In summer, average highs in Faro reach about 29°C (85°F), but the Atlantic stays cool, so a wetsuit is useful for long sessions. Winter days are mild, with highs around 16 to 17°C (61 to 63°F). Conditions change with tide, swell direction and wind, so check a local surf forecast or ask your surf school before heading out.
Plan around the weather
West Coast: The Algarve's Most Consistent Surf
The Atlantic west coast is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It faces open ocean swell, so there is usually a wave somewhere, and the beaches are wild and less built up than the south.
Praia da Arrifana, near Aljezur
Arrifana is a bay below high cliffs, with the remains of a fortress above it. The cliffs give some shelter from wind, and the waves suit every level depending on the day.
- Level: all levels.
- Best conditions: consistent waves through most of the year. You park at the top of the cliffs and walk down.
Praia do Amado, near Carrapateira
Amado is a wide beach popular with surf schools. Gentler sections suit beginners, while the more powerful peaks challenge experienced surfers. It has hosted national and international competitions.
- Level: all levels.
- Best conditions: surfable year-round.
Praia da Bordeira, near Carrapateira
Bordeira is a long beach with many peaks, plus a left-hand point break for experienced surfers. It picks up north and northwest swell, so it works most of the year.
- Level: beginners on small days, experienced surfers on bigger swells.
- Best conditions: small to medium swell without onshore wind. Rip currents are strong, and lifeguards are on duty from May to October.
Praia da Cordoama, near Vila do Bispo
Cordoama is a long, exposed beach with several peaks and powerful beach-break waves. It is usually less crowded than Arrifana and Amado, and Praia do Castelejo is next door.
- Level: intermediate and advanced; softer sections for improvers.
- Best conditions: reliable year-round thanks to its exposed position.
SURF LESSON IN CARRAPATEIRA
A 90-minute group surf lesson near Carrapateira on the west coast, with a maximum of eight students per instructor. Softboard, leash and wetsuit are included.

Sagres: Two Coasts in One Place
Sagres sits where the west and south coasts meet, so when the wind or swell is wrong on one side, the other side often works.
Praia do Beliche, Sagres
Beliche is a southwest-facing beach below cliffs near Cape St. Vincent. The cliffs keep conditions clean, and the waves can be powerful and hollow.
- Level: intermediate and advanced; smaller summer days suit improvers.
- Best conditions: mid to high tide with west or northwest swell and north or northeast winds.
Praia do Zavial, near Vila do Bispo
Zavial, on the south coast east of Sagres, has a right-hand point break and a beach break. It is the spot to check when the west coast is too rough.
- Level: intermediate and advanced; smaller days suit progressing surfers.
- Best conditions: autumn and winter, with southwest and west swells.
South Coast: Lagos to Albufeira
The south coast is more sheltered and usually smaller, which makes it good for beginners in summer. It comes alive in winter when big swells wrap around from the west.
Meia Praia, Lagos
Meia Praia is a long beach east of Lagos with a gentle beach break and a sandy bottom, a good place for a first lesson. On bigger swells it has playful peaks for intermediates.
- Level: beginners and longboarders.
- Best conditions: surfable year-round when there is enough swell.
Praia do Porto de Mós, Lagos
Porto de Mós, just west of Lagos, has a reef break on its right side that works in winter, when north swells are too strong on the west coast. In summer the waves are small and the beach is busy with swimmers.
- Level: intermediate and advanced.
- Best conditions: winter swells. Watch for currents in stormy weather and rocks at low tide.
Praia da Rocha, Portimão
Praia da Rocha is mainly a swimming beach, but its eastern side can have good waves in autumn and winter.
- Level: intermediate.
- Best conditions: occasional autumn and winter swells. Check the forecast first.
Praia da Falésia, Albufeira
Falésia is a long beach below red cliffs. Small summer waves suit beginners, while spring and autumn bring bigger swells.
- Level: beginners in summer; intermediate in spring and autumn.
- Best conditions: small summer days for learning.

- Sagres: small and relaxed, with spots on both coasts within minutes.
